When I was a sophomore in high school, I got an art assignment: design my dream home.
I stared at the blank paper, unsure where to start. The only thing I could think of was a dishwasher.
Growing up, we never had one that worked. So when I moved into my first apartment at 19 — a cheap, outdated place I still live in to this day — I was overjoyed just to have a working dishwasher. That tiny luxury felt like a milestone.
This week, a friend is coming to stay with me, and as I’ve been cleaning and preparing, I’ve noticed all the little things I wish I could fix — the weak water pressure in the guest shower, the chipped cabinet knobs, the balcony that needs sweeping.
Yes, I know — I should call maintenance. But honestly? That kind of thing has always made my heart race. I can stare down an armed anti-choice protestor without flinching, but picking up the phone to ask for help? Terrifying.
I’ve never liked asking for help. I don’t like asking for favors — never have. Sometimes, I think I’d rather drown than bother the lifeguard.
So I made a decision: if asking for help is hard, then I’ll focus on helping others instead — hoping that one day, when I needed it, I’d find the courage to ask.
Today, I’m practicing that courage. I’m asking for your help.
I want to continue educating people, telling the truth about politics and government, and doing it paywall-free — because I was once the kid who couldn’t afford to pay.

You got the upgrade, Olivia Julianna.
Hi Julianna
I'm pretty strapped. Retired and SS checks are my only income. I would subscribe if things were not so tight. But just can't do it right now.
